Farmers in UP will get these crop irrigation equipment on subsidy, apply like this
The government has integrated the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) into this plan, offering subsidies to farmers for adopting modern irrigation techniques. These include drip, sprinkler, and portable irrigation systems.
In a significant move to support farmers and address the issue of declining groundwater levels, the Yogi government of Uttar Pradesh has rolled out a scheme prioritizing efficient irrigation methods like drip and sprinkler systems. Announced on December 10, 2024, this initiative aims to reduce water consumption in agriculture while enhancing crop yield and farmers’ income.
Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana Takes Center Stage
The government has integrated the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) into this plan, offering subsidies to farmers for adopting modern irrigation techniques. These include drip, sprinkler, and portable irrigation systems. The primary goal is to encourage water conservation and boost agricultural water-use efficiency across the state.
The scheme is also aligned with the Central Government’s Micro Irrigation initiative, focusing on reducing water wastage while promoting sustainable farming practices.
How Farmers Benefit
Under the scheme, the Uttar Pradesh Horticulture Department will oversee the distribution of subsidies ranging from 75% to 90% based on the irrigation system and the farmer’s landholding size. Farmers purchasing drip, mini sprinkler, portable sprinkler, or raingun systems will receive financial assistance directly in their bank accounts after the equipment purchase.
- Small and Marginal Farmers: Eligible for up to 90% subsidy on drip and mini-sprinkler systems.
- Other Farmers (with over 2 hectares of land): Will receive 80% subsidy on the same systems.
- Portable Sprinkler and Raingun Systems: Subsidies range from 65% to 75%, depending on the farmer category.
This initiative not only reduces irrigation costs but also helps save water, making agriculture more sustainable.
Efficient Application Process
The scheme follows a “first-come, first-served” principle to ensure transparency and efficiency. Farmers interested in availing of the benefits must submit their applications with the following documents:
- Copy of their Aadhaar Card
- Bank Passbook
- Land Records (Khatauni)
Preference will be given to those with private irrigation facilities. This targeted approach ensures the benefits reach the right farmers swiftly.
Fighting the Decline in Groundwater
The initiative comes at a crucial time when the state is grappling with a continuous decline in groundwater levels. Traditional flood irrigation methods not only consume excessive water but also increase farming costs. By switching to drip and sprinkler irrigation, farmers can achieve precise water delivery, reduce wastage, and protect the depleting groundwater reserves.
According to experts, drip irrigation can save up to 50% of water compared to conventional methods, while improving crop quality and yield. For farmers, this means reduced input costs and higher profits.
Impact on Agriculture
This scheme is expected to revolutionize farming in Uttar Pradesh by making it more resource-efficient. Reduced water dependency will enable farmers to cultivate more land with the same water resources. Additionally, lower costs for irrigation will directly contribute to higher profitability.
By fostering modern irrigation techniques, the government is addressing two critical challenges—water conservation and agricultural productivity. Such measures also align with national goals for sustainable agriculture.
